About the company
Our client is a successful, privately owned UK engineering and manufacturing business entering an exciting new phase of its development. Having established a strong position in its existing market, the CEO is now leading plans for further growth, building on an innovative R&D function and the development of new products and applications for a broader range of industrial markets.
Central to those plans is the continued development of the company's engineering capability. The CEO has historically maintained significant involvement in the engineering function, but as the business expands the intention is to bring in an accomplished electrical design engineer who can initially work closely with him before progressively taking ownership of engineering themselves. As the company grows, they will have the opportunity to develop the function around them, introducing their own ideas, strengthening engineering processes and ultimately building and leading the team needed to support the next stage of the company's growth.
About the role
This is an opportunity for an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to take on a role that will develop considerably as the company grows.
Initially, the position will be predominantly hands-on, taking a lead role in the electrical design work that supports the company's manufacturing operation. Working directly with the CEO and alongside R&D, Manufacturing and Purchasing, the successful candidate will establish themselves as a trusted technical presence within the business while improving the consistency, accuracy and efficiency of the engineering output.
Over time, the emphasis will broaden. As responsibility for the engineering function transfers from the CEO, the successful candidate will have increasing freedom to shape engineering standards and processes, support and mentor other engineers and ultimately build and lead a team around them.
Key duties will include:
- Producing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control panel layouts
- Designing and specifying industrial electrical control systems
- Producing and maintaining drawings, BOMs and associated technical documentation
- Mentoring and supervising junior colleagues
- Reviewing designs and maintaining appropriate engineering standards
- Working closely with Manufacturing to ensure designs are accurate, practical and efficient to build
- Liaising with R&D, Purchasing and other functions throughout the design and manufacturing process
- Identifying and implementing improvements to engineering methods, processes and documentation
- Taking increasing ownership of the engineering function as the role develops
- Ultimately recruiting, supporting and building the engineering team as Head of Engineering.
Benefits
- Up to £65k per annum
- Company Pension
- Increasing holiday allowance
- Fantastic opportunity with career development baked in.

Candidates
Profile
This role is likely to suit an experienced electrical design engineer who remains enthusiastic about hands-on engineering but is ready for greater ownership and influence. You may already be operating at senior or lead level, perhaps mentoring other engineers, but do not necessarily need to have held a formal engineering management position.
Just as important will be the confidence to work closely with a technically strong CEO, contribute your own ideas and constructively challenge existing approaches where appropriate. The opportunity should particularly appeal to someone motivated by the prospect of putting their own stamp on an engineering function and, over time, building and leading a team around them.
Key requirements
- HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Strong experience designing industrial electrical control systems
- Excellent electrical schematic, wiring diagram and control panel design capability
- Experience working within an engineering/manufacturing environment where designs progress through into physical manufacture
- A practical understanding of design for manufacture and the interaction between Engineering and Manufacturing
- Confidence to take ownership of technical decisions and identify opportunities to improve engineering standards and processes
- PLC-controlled equipment experience would be advantageous, although this is an electrical design rather than PLC programming role
- Previous mentoring, supervisory or technical leadership experience would be useful but is not essential
Relevant industry backgrounds could include industrial automation, special-purpose machinery, material handling and conveyors, process equipment, food & beverage, water treatment, HVAC or other controls-led engineering and manufacturing environments.
